Easter… times two!

This was a great first Easter for me as a floral designer – I had the opportunity to design flowers for two different family Easter dinners. If you remember my Easter arrangements for Lisa, you might recognize some of these flowers – I used mostly the same flowers with variations to match the different settings.

As an avid hat collector (and hat lover), I can never separate Easter from hats. Did your mom dress you up in frothy pastel dresses with little white hats, too? Easter morning was always just as much about the fashion as it was about the easter basket. And while I have upgraded from the childhood “Easter bonnet” to more refined and grown up hats, I can’t say no to the opportunity to get dressed up in something more frilly than usual and add a jaunty bit of headwear. This round arrangement below was the first to be assembled, and it got most of my Easter excitement – can you see the bonnet influence?

Lisa’s Easter Dinner

Good Enough to Eat

Edible has always intrigued me.

I’m a picky eater, yes, and am often more concerned with texture than flavor, but I love trying new things – I am all about presentation: if it looks incredible, I will be more excited about eating it.  As a kid I loved the freedom and adventure of going out in the backyard or woods and knowing about plants I could eat. We grew wild strawberries, among other things, and I loved searching the yard for a couple of fresh, sweet bites. I love that some plants have both traditional edible parts as well as other more unusual parts that can also be eaten. Garlic, for example – delicious in bulb, and incredible in flower! Plants with edible flowers make my day. Continue reading

Small Spaces

As a city girl, I have always been resigned to living in a small space. Actually, it is my dream to live in a brick apartment with a wrought iron fire escape for my plants. Even for those lucky enough to be in a house, space might be limited. If you want to be in town, you’re likely to be in a beautiful, old neighborhood. And old houses for the middle class, with all their charm, tend to have small rooms. Farm houses and Victorian tend to be the oldest houses you can find in Portland (when other cities were building fabulous houses in previous architectural styles, Oregon was pretty much still in log cabin phase), and that means small rooms. Working class war era houses abound as well – possibly even smaller. Continue reading

Delicate Blues and Greens

Here’s an example of a delicate blue pew/chair/hanging arrangement. These arrangements are so versatile – they can go from the ceremony to the reception and be attached to almost anything. They have just enough movement to feel fresh and a little wild, with a little softness to keep it romantic.
